The Fox, the Prophet, and the Hen over Jerusalem
Jesus refuses to let Herod’s threat control his timetable, calls the ruler a fox, and continues toward Jerusalem because “it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.” He then laments the city that kills prophets and rejects his desire to gather its children as a hen gathers chicks.
Where this fits in the story: Jerusalem is simultaneously holy city, prophetic destination, and site of covenant resistance. Luke’s journey motif now carries both love and judgment.
The lament matters theologically: judgment is not narrated as delight in destruction. Jesus’ grief reveals a rejected desire to gather and protect.
