2 Kings 1:9–14
Two arrogant detachments are consumed by fire, while a third captain approaches humbly and is spared; Elijah confronts the king. This opening chapter continues directly from 1 Kings: Ahab’s house still rules the northern kingdom, but the central question is whether Israel’s king will seek the LORD or another god. Elijah’s word and the king’s response establish a recurring 2 Kings theme—the prophetic word outlasting royal power.
James and John’s desire to call fire from heaven unmistakably recalls Elijah. Later manuscripts make the allusion explicit with ‘as Elijah did,’ but early witnesses omit those words; the narrative echo remains even in the shorter text.
Luke 9 replays an Elijah-shaped fire-from-heaven judgment pattern when James and John want to call down fire on a Samaritan village, and Jesus redirects them away from that response. Some manuscripts add “as Elijah did,” but the core echo does not depend on the disputed expansion; the narrative itself supplies the pattern and contrast.
