Levite Tithes and the Tithe of the Tithe
Israel’s tithe supports the Levites because their inheritance is Tabernacle service. The Levites then present a tenth of what they receive to the priests. Leviticus says the tithe is holy to YHWH; Numbers explains how that holy provision is distributed.
Leviticus 27 declares tithes from the land and herd holy to YHWH. Numbers 18 then explains how Israel’s tithes support the Levites and how the Levites themselves give a “tithe of the tithe” to the priests. The later passage develops the allocation and priestly-service function of a tithe already treated as belonging to God.
Numbers assigns Israel’s tithes to the Levites as the inheritance supporting their sanctuary service. Malachi’s charge that the people rob God in tithes and offerings assumes this Torah-shaped system of worship support.
Hebrews says the sons of Levi who receive the priesthood have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people; Numbers 18 assigns Israel’s tithes to the Levites for their sanctuary service.
Joshua’s repeated statement that Levi has no territorial inheritance develops Torah’s teaching that the LORD and his holy service are Levi’s portion. Joshua’s repeated statement about Levi therefore preserves the distinctive inheritance pattern established in Torah rather than merely reporting missing territory.
Nehemiah’s covenant commitments to tithes and Levitical portions continue Torah’s system for supporting Levites and sanctuary service. The reform therefore restores not just generic generosity but the covenant support structure by which sanctuary workers received their appointed provision.
