Firstfruits, Tithes, and the House of God
The covenant commitments continue with firstfruits, firstborn, portions for priests, and tithes for Levites. The people summarize their resolve with the promise, “we will not forsake the house of our God.” This language anticipates the irony of chapter 13, where Levites do in fact leave their service because portions are not being provided. The passage therefore functions both as covenant commitment and as a standard by which later failure will be measured. It also connects Nehemiah with Malachi's concern for neglected tithes and storehouses. The purpose is not to create a simplistic one-to-one rule for modern church finance but to show covenant responsibility for sustaining worship and those appointed to serve.
