God’s Faithfulness Recounted
Joshua 24 concludes the book with a covenant-renewal assembly at Shechem. Joshua recounts God’s acts from Abraham through the exodus and conquest, calls Israel to exclusive service of the LORD, records the covenant witness, and closes with the deaths and burials of Joshua and Eleazar and the burial of Joseph’s bones.
Joshua looks back to Terah, Abraham’s father, and remembers the family living beyond the River before God brought Abraham out. That directly recalls the family setting at the end of Genesis 11 and helps introduce Abraham’s later call.
Joshua explicitly remembers God giving Mount Seir to Esau, carrying Genesis 36’s identification of Esau, Edom, and Seir into Israel’s later covenant-history memory. Esau’s territorial possession is therefore treated as part of God’s providential ordering of the nations.
Joshua’s covenant-history speech explicitly remembers Jacob and his children going down into Egypt. Genesis 46 narrates that migration in detail, making this a direct later-biblical recollection of the family’s descent into Egypt before the Exodus era.
Joshua 24 explicitly recalls God taking Abraham from beyond the River and leading him through Canaan, directly summarizing the call that begins in Genesis 12. Israel’s covenant history is thus traced back to God’s initiative with Abraham.
Joshua’s covenant speech explicitly retells Israel’s history in Egypt, the sending of Moses and Aaron, the plagues, the sea, and God’s deliverance. The speech compresses the Exodus story into a covenant argument for Israel’s present loyalty to YHWH, making the relationship direct and certain.
Joshua’s review of Sihon and Og reaches back to the victories east of the Jordan that opened the final approach to Canaan. Joshua names the same kings and territories as part of the covenant-history review, so the link is explicit remembrance rather than a general conquest theme.
