The Promise to Abraham and His Seed
Paul argues from the permanence of a confirmed covenant: a later law cannot cancel an earlier promise. He then focuses on the promise to Abraham and his “seed,” identifying that Seed ultimately with Christ. The law came 430 years later and therefore cannot turn God’s promised inheritance into something earned by law. In Paul’s reading, inheritance rests on God’s gracious promise and reaches its decisive fulfillment in Christ.
Presence / covenant lens: Paul’s focus on Abraham’s “seed” and Christ is inspired apostolic interpretation, not a secret Hebrew grammar trick. Hebrew zera can function collectively; Paul’s argument is theological and canonical, centering the promise in Christ while later including those who belong to Christ in the promise family.
