Pentecost: Wind, Fire, and Many Languages
Acts 2:1–13 centers on pentecost: wind, fire, and many languages. On Pentecost the gathered disciples encounter a sound like a rushing mighty wind, divided tongues like fire, filling by the Holy Spirit, and speech in other tongues. Diaspora Jews from many regions hear God’s mighty works in their own languages, producing amazement and competing explanations.
The wider biblical story comes into focus here. Sinai-like fire/sound, Numbers 11’s hope that God’s people might receive the Spirit, prophetic Spirit promises, and the nations-language problem of Genesis 11 all form responsible canonical backgrounds. Pentecost creates unity across languages rather than erasing linguistic diversity.
