The Rebellion and the Man of Lawlessness
Paul says “the rebellion” must come and the “man of lawlessness” be revealed. The KJV’s “man of sin” reflects a manuscript variant; early and strong witnesses support “lawlessness,” which fits the repeated language in verses 7–8.
Paul’s description is steeped in earlier biblical portraits of arrogant rulers. Daniel 11:36 describes a king who exalts and magnifies himself above every god. Paul gathers that anti-God self-exaltation pattern into an eschatological opponent.
