The Rejected Shepherd, Thirty Pieces of Silver, and the Broken Staves
Zechariah is told to shepherd a flock doomed for slaughter. He takes two staffs, names them Beauty/Favor and Bands/Union, removes three shepherds, then becomes rejected by the flock. When he asks for his wages, they weigh out thirty pieces of silver. The LORD responds with biting irony—‘a goodly price that I was prized at of them’—and tells him to throw the money to the potter in the house of the LORD. Zechariah then breaks the second staff, dramatizing fractured brotherhood.
