The Fig Tree, the Temple, Faith, and Forgiveness
Jesus curses a leafy fig tree with no fruit, enters the temple, drives out those buying and selling, overturns tables, and quotes Scripture: God’s house is to be a house of prayer for all nations, but they have made it a den of robbers. The next morning the disciples see the fig tree withered. Mark has deliberately placed the temple action inside the fig-tree story, joining fruitlessness and judgment.
Where this fits in the story: Isaiah 56 envisions worship reaching the nations, while Jeremiah 7 condemns people who treat the temple like a safe refuge while practicing injustice. Jesus’ action is therefore not random anger at commerce; it is a prophetic indictment framed by Scripture.
