The Seventh Day — Creation Rest and the Promise of Rest
Genesis 2:1–3 closes the creation week with completion rather than exhaustion. God finishes His work, rests on the seventh day, blesses that day, and sets it apart. The passage therefore introduces a pattern that later Scripture itself repeatedly interprets.
The first explicit development comes in the Sabbath command. Exodus 20:8–11 reaches directly back to creation: Israel is to work six days and rest on the seventh because the LORD made heaven and earth in six days and rested the seventh. Exodus 31:12–17 repeats the same creation pattern and makes Sabbath a covenant sign for Israel. These are not merely similar ideas; the later texts explicitly ground Israel’s Sabbath in Genesis 2.
