A Promise of Rest Still Stands
Hebrews refuses to treat the wilderness failure as the end of the subject. A promise of entering God’s rest still remains, so the congregation must respond with reverent seriousness. Israel heard good news but did not benefit because the message was not united with faith in the hearers. The writer then brings Psalm 95 together with Genesis 2:2: God’s rest existed from the completion of creation, long before Joshua and the land. By placing creation rest beside the wilderness oath, Hebrews begins showing that “rest” is larger than one geographic settlement or one generation’s experience.
