The Ancient Serpent Bound and Finally Defeated
Revelation 20:1–3 shows an angel binding the dragon, identified as the Devil and Satan, and confining him in the abyss for a thousand years so that he cannot deceive the nations during that period. The passage states the binding and later release plainly, while the precise relationship of the thousand years to other end-time events has been interpreted differently across Christian traditions.
Revelation 20:2 again identifies the dragon as “that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan” before describing his thousand-year binding. The repeated identification keeps the Genesis serpent, Revelation’s dragon, and the final adversary in one continuous biblical conflict. The ancient deceiver who entered the story near its beginning is now shown under restraint and moving toward final judgment.
Revelation 20:2–10 follows the old serpent from binding to brief release and final defeat. After the thousand years Satan deceives the nations again, gathers them in a Gog-and-Magog rebellion, and is consumed by divine judgment. The Devil is then cast into the lake of fire, where the beast and false prophet already are, bringing the serpent’s biblical storyline to its irreversible end.
Revelation 20:4–6 shows thrones and those who reign with Christ, giving special attention to faithful witnesses who refused the beast and its mark. They share in the first resurrection and are called blessed and holy; the second death has no power over them. The passage joins resurrection, priestly identity, and reigning with Christ while leaving some chronological questions debated among interpreters.
Revelation 20:6 declares those who share in the first resurrection blessed and holy because the second death has no power over them. They are priests of God and Christ and reign with Him. The promise gathers themes introduced in the letters to the churches: overcoming, priestly service, freedom from the second death, and participation in Christ’s rule.
Revelation 20:7–10 describes Satan’s release, his deception of nations called Gog and Magog, their encirclement of the saints, and their destruction by fire from God. Ezekiel’s Gog imagery is reused on a worldwide scale rather than copied point for point. The conflict ends not in uncertainty but with Satan’s final consignment to the lake of fire.
Revelation identifies the dragon as the ancient serpent and depicts his final restraint and judgment, bringing the serpent-conflict trajectory that begins in Genesis 3:15 to its canonical endpoint.

Job presents Leviathan as a terrifying creature beyond human mastery but wholly under God’s rule; Revelation 20 depicts the dragon finally seized and bound. The two passages share the wider canonical theme of divine mastery over terrifying opposition without proving that Job’s Leviathan and Revelation’s dragon are the same figure.
