The Feast of Booths Rediscovered
On the next day, leaders, priests, and Levites study the Torah more closely and discover the commands concerning the Feast of Booths. The people gather branches, build shelters on roofs and in courtyards, and celebrate with extraordinary joy while the law is read daily. Verse 17 does not mean Israel had never celebrated the feast since Joshua; other biblical texts explicitly record later celebrations, including Ezra 3. The claim is about the remarkable manner and breadth of this observance. Canonically, the feast remembers wilderness dependence and later becomes a major setting for Jesus' teaching in John 7–8, where themes of water and light are brought into a Christ-centered horizon.
