The Altar Before the Temple: Sacrifice Restored in Fear
In the seventh month the returned community gathers in Jerusalem “as one man.” Jeshua the high priest and Zerubbabel the governor rebuild the altar and begin offering the sacrifices prescribed in the law of Moses—even before the temple foundation has been laid.
That order matters. The community’s first public restoration act centers on worship, atonement, and obedience to Torah. They keep the Feast of Tabernacles and resume the regular burnt offerings while living with fear of the surrounding peoples. The altar does not remove their vulnerability; it locates their life again around the LORD.
