The Twenty-Four Elders
Revelation 4:4 places twenty-four elders around God’s throne, clothed in white and wearing crowns. Revelation does not explicitly explain their identity, so proposals about patriarchs, apostles, priestly orders, or heavenly representatives should remain appropriately cautious. What the text makes clear is their subordinate place around the throne and their continual worship of the Creator.
Exodus 24 depicts Israel’s elders in a covenant scene before God, while Revelation 4 portrays a heavenly assembly of twenty-four elders around the throne. The shared elder-and-throne/court imagery creates a meaningful canonical parallel, but Revelation never identifies its elders as the Sinai elders.
Daniel's thrones and heavenly court form a major background to Revelation 4's enthroned heavenly assembly.
Revelation's throne, rainbow-like radiance, and four living creatures extensively rework Ezekiel 1.
Revelation 4's throne room and threefold 'holy' deliberately draw on Isaiah 6's vision of YHWH enthroned amid heavenly worship.
