First Four Bowls: Sores, Blood, Justice, and Scorching Sun
Revelation 16:1–9 pours the first four bowls upon earth, sea, rivers, and the sun. The judgments echo the plagues of Egypt while intensifying them, and the heavenly response explicitly declares God righteous because those who shed the blood of saints and prophets receive judgment. Even under severe judgment, the passage says people blaspheme rather than repent.
The first bowl’s painful sores in Revelation strongly recall the Exodus plague of boils that broke out on people and animals in Egypt. Revelation uses plague imagery to portray divine judgment on a rebellious world, drawing readers back to the Exodus pattern without formally quoting Exodus 9.
Revelation’s second and third bowls turn the sea and fresh waters to blood, strongly recalling the Exodus plague in which Egypt’s waters became blood. The apocalyptic vision expands the plague pattern from Egypt’s river system to a far wider judgment scene.
Zephaniah gathers nations and pours out indignation and fierce anger; Revelation’s bowl sequence opens with a command to pour out God’s wrath on the earth.
Revelation’s bowls of wrath develop a long biblical image in which divine judgment is pictured as a cup poured out or drunk. Psalm 75:8 is a major Old Testament witness to that cup-of-wrath symbolism and helps readers recognize the imagery’s scriptural depth.
