Revelation 8:3–4
Revelation 8:2–6 prepares the seven trumpets through a scene of incense, prayer, altar fire, and divine response. The prayers of the saints rise before God with incense, after which fire from the altar is cast to the earth amid thunder, voices, lightning, and earthquake. Revelation presents judgment as occurring in the presence of God and in relation to the cries of His people.
Revelation’s golden altar, incense, and prayers rework the tabernacle incense-altar complex established in Exodus 30. The shared sanctuary imagery strongly suggests intentional allusion, while Revelation relocates the scene into a heavenly and apocalyptic setting.
Revelation 8:3–4 may echo Psalm 141:2 when incense and the prayers of the saints rise before God, but the scene also draws naturally from the broader tabernacle and temple incense tradition. The connection is meaningful while exact literary dependence remains uncertain.
