Sardis: Wake Up, Strengthen What Remains, and Keep Your Name
Revelation 3:1–6 warns Sardis that a reputation for life can conceal spiritual deadness. Christ calls the church to wake, strengthen what remains, remember what it received, repent, and watch. The promises of white garments, an enduring name in the book of life, and Christ’s confession before the Father present perseverance as the evidence of genuine life.
Revelation 3:5 promises the conqueror white garments and says that Christ will not blot that person’s name from the book of life. Book-of-life imagery appears elsewhere in Scripture as a picture of those who belong to God and reaches its final judgment setting in Revelation 20. The emphasis of the promise is assurance to the faithful, not an invitation to speculate beyond what the text states.
Jude warns believers to rescue people from sin while hating even a garment “spotted by the flesh.” Revelation later praises believers who have not “defiled their garments.” Both use clothing as a picture of a life stained—or kept clean—by moral compromise.
Revelation’s warning to Sardis joins wakefulness with Christ coming like a thief, echoing the same watchful-thief complex used in 1 Thessalonians 5. Strong shared early Christian watchfulness imagery. The relationship should remain at its approved evidence level and should not be used to infer a more detailed chronology, identity, or literary dependence than the paired passages actually establish.
Revelation 3:5 probably reuses Psalm 69:28’s book-of-the-living and blotting-out imagery, but Exodus 32:32–33 and Daniel 12:1 are also major members of the same biblical source field. Psalm 69 therefore matters without being claimed as the exclusive source.
Matthew’s unexpected-thief/watchfulness warning reappears in Revelation 3:3, where the risen Christ warns Sardis that failure to watch means he will come like a thief. Revelation 3:3 belongs to the early Christian reuse of Jesus’ thief/watchfulness warning.
