The Son of Man Among the Seven Lampstands
Revelation 1:9–20 gives John’s opening vision of the risen Christ among seven golden lampstands. The imagery of the Son of Man, blazing eyes, radiant glory, and sovereign authority draws heavily from Daniel’s heavenly visions, while the lampstands are explicitly interpreted as the seven churches. The scene establishes Jesus as present among His churches and Lord over death and the grave.
Revelation 1:12–20 centers on the glorious figure John sees among the lampstands. Features such as the Son-of-Man form, white hair, fiery eyes, bronze-like feet, mighty voice, and radiant face belong to the prophetic vision world of Daniel and Ezekiel, yet Revelation applies the combined portrait to the risen Jesus, who identifies Himself as the living One who was dead and is alive for evermore.
Judges 5:31 prays that those who love the LORD will be like the sun going forth in strength; Revelation 1:16 describes the risen Christ’s face as the sun shining in its strength. The unusually close image is a plausible Revelation reuse, but Revelation does not identify Judges as its source.
Revelation 1:13 may echo the Septuagint wording of Song 1:2 in its description of the exalted Jesus, using the unusual Greek word mastoi (“breasts”) where Daniel’s parallel has “waist/loins.”
John's radiant description of the exalted Christ closely reworks Daniel 10:5–6.
Revelation's white-haired, blazing vision of Christ draws on the Ancient of Days imagery of Daniel 7:9.
The sound like many waters in Revelation 1:15 participates in Ezekiel's throne-vision imagery.
The sharp weapon imagery associated with the servant's mouth in Isaiah 49:2 provides a strong prophetic background for the sword from Christ's mouth.
The risen Jesus calls himself 'the first and the last,' a divine title spoken by YHWH in Isaiah 44:6.
Revelation identifies the risen Jesus as “one like unto the Son of man,” unmistakably taking up Daniel 7’s humanlike heavenly ruler.
The contrast is Christologically powerful while remaining a canonical trajectory rather than specific Revelation reuse of Ecclesiastes.
Stephen’s vision of the Son of Man in heavenly glory stands in the same Danielic Christological trajectory that Revelation develops in its vision of one like the Son of Man.
