Wisdom Under a Powerful King
Wisdom changes how a person carries himself, but life under political authority requires discernment. Qoheleth counsels keeping the king’s command while also warning against becoming entangled in evil. The king’s word carries power, and ordinary subjects cannot simply control royal action. Yet even rulers do not control the future, and no person has power to imprison the wind or spirit, or to rule the day of death. “There is no discharge in that war.” Political power therefore has a hard boundary: mortality. The section holds two truths together—authority is real, and authority is not ultimate.
