The Son Is Tested in the Wilderness
Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness for forty days and answers every temptation from Deuteronomy. Those quotations come from passages reflecting on Israel’s wilderness failures. Matthew therefore presents Jesus not merely as an individual resisting temptation but as the obedient Son living Israel’s story faithfully: hunger without unbelief, danger without testing God, and kingship without idolatry.
Where this fits in the story: Israel is called God’s son, passes through water, enters the wilderness, and is tested. Jesus has just passed through the Jordan, been declared Son, and now enters the wilderness.
