Rahab’s Confession of Faith
Joshua 2 tells the story of two spies sent to scout Jericho, their providential meeting with Rahab, and her courageous choice to protect them. Her faith in the God of Israel led her to risk her life, align herself with His people, and secure salvation for her household.
James explicitly names Rahab and recalls how she received the messengers and sent them out another way, directly drawing on Joshua 2 as an example of faith becoming visible through costly action.
Hebrews explicitly interprets Rahab’s reception of the spies as an act of faith that distinguished her from Jericho’s unbelief and explains why she did not perish when the city fell.
Rahab reports that Canaan has heard of Israel’s Exodus and that the people’s hearts have melted, closely matching the Song of the Sea’s expectation that Canaan’s inhabitants would hear and melt in fear. Joshua thus narrates the fulfillment of the fear anticipated in Exodus 15.
Rahab’s confession that YHWH is God in heaven above and earth beneath strongly resonates with Deuteronomy’s declaration of YHWH’s unique sovereignty over heaven and earth. The outsider’s confession mirrors Israel’s own covenant theology.
Judges’ capture of Bethel deliberately resembles Joshua’s Rahab narrative: scouts receive help from a local inhabitant, promise protection, spare the helper and household, and survive the city’s fall.
