Joseph Takes Bethel
The house of Joseph scouts Bethel and promises mercy to a local man who reveals the city entrance. He and his household are spared, then he leaves and establishes another city named Luz. The episode strongly recalls Joshua’s Rahab/Jericho spy story, but the different ending matters: the rescued Bethelite does not become part of Israel in the way Rahab does.
Judges opens by showing the unfinished local occupation task anticipated in Joshua 13, demonstrating how broad conquest summaries and continuing tribal failures belong together rather than contradicting one another.
Judges’ capture of Bethel deliberately resembles Joshua’s Rahab narrative: scouts receive help from a local inhabitant, promise protection, spare the helper and household, and survive the city’s fall.
