Joshua Prepares the People
Joshua 1 opens with a monumental transition in Israel’s history. Moses, the servant of the Lord, has died, and God commissions Joshua to lead His people into the land of promise. The Lord’s charge is filled with both encouragement and responsibility—promising His abiding presence and complete victory while commanding Joshua to be strong, courageous, and anchored in the Word.
Joshua’s reminder to Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh directly carries out the pledge those tribes made to Moses. Joshua’s command is therefore not a new military demand but enforcement of the tribes’ own earlier covenant commitment to help their brothers receive inheritance.
The eastern tribes’ duty in Joshua repeats Moses’ command that their armed men cross first until the other tribes receive their inheritance and rest. Their own rest does not cancel responsibility for their brothers.
