A Foothold on the Promise – Settling the East Side
Deuteronomy 3:12–22 is the movement “A Foothold on the Promise – Settling the East Side.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.” It closes with: “Ye shall not fear them: for the LORD your God he shall fight for you.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Land, Inheritance, Exile, and Return: Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh receive Transjordan inheritance while remaining bound to the whole nation’s mission.
