Numbers 32:16–32
The tribes clarify that they will build protection for families and livestock but cross armed with Israel until the western land is secured. Their inheritance east of the Jordan is made conditional on shared responsibility for the conquest.
Moses states the conditions before Eleazar, Joshua, and the tribal leaders. If the eastern tribes fight through the conquest, they receive Gilead; if not, they must take land in Canaan. The arrangement is public and enforceable, not a private bargain.
Joshua’s reminder to Reuben, Gad, and half-Manasseh directly carries out the pledge those tribes made to Moses. Joshua’s command is therefore not a new military demand but enforcement of the tribes’ own earlier covenant commitment to help their brothers receive inheritance.
