God Commissions Joshua
Joshua 1 opens with a monumental transition in Israel’s history. Moses, the servant of the Lord, has died, and God commissions Joshua to lead His people into the land of promise. The Lord’s charge is filled with both encouragement and responsibility—promising His abiding presence and complete victory while commanding Joshua to be strong, courageous, and anchored in the Word.
Joshua opens by repeating the courage, divine-presence, and law-obedience commission Moses delivered at Deuteronomy’s close, making the new book a direct narrative continuation. The transition is therefore both verbal and structural.
Deuteronomy closes with Joshua filled with wisdom and Moses unmatched; Joshua opens with Moses dead and Joshua commanded to lead Israel across the Jordan, continuing the succession deliberately.
God’s commissioning of Joshua carries forward the appointment Moses made before Israel entered the land. Joshua 1 begins the execution of an appointment already made publicly before Moses’ death rather than introducing Joshua as an unanticipated replacement.
Joshua 1 deliberately resumes Moses’ commission to Joshua: be strong, enter the land, trust YHWH’s presence, and remain obedient to the covenant word. The succession is consciously Torah-governed rather than improvised.
The LORD’s own commissioning of Joshua in Deuteronomy is resumed almost word for word as Joshua opens, carrying courage, land-entry, and divine-presence language into the new leader’s mission.
Joshua’s command to keep Torah continually before him develops Deuteronomy’s ideal of a leader ruled by God’s written instruction rather than by autonomous royal preference. Torah thus governs leadership before Israel even has a monarchy.
David’s charge to Solomon to be strong, obey Torah, and prosper closely echoes the commission given to Joshua, linking successful covenant leadership with courage under God’s written word.
Hebrews repeats the assurance that God will never leave or forsake his people, wording that closely matches Joshua 1:5 while also overlapping Deuteronomy 31’s commissioning language.
