Moses' Final Encouragement and Joshua's Commission
Deuteronomy 31:1–8 is the movement “Moses' Final Encouragement and Joshua's Commission.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel.” It closes with: “And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.”
Within the book’s larger story, this section advances several important biblical threads. Mediator and Intercession: Leadership passes from Moses to Joshua while God’s unfailing presence remains the foundation of courage.
