Joshua Is Commissioned so Israel Will Not Be Sheep without a Shepherd
Moses asks YHWH to appoint a leader who can go out and come in before the congregation so they will not be “as sheep which have no shepherd.” YHWH chooses Joshua, a man in whom is the Spirit, and Moses publicly lays hands on him before Eleazar and the congregation.
Christological mirror: the Gospels later describe crowds around Jesus as “sheep having no shepherd.” That language strongly echoes Moses’ concern here and presents Jesus inside the Bible’s shepherd-leadership trajectory. It is a strong mirror, not a formal fulfillment prophecy. Translation note: the KJV’s “Jesus” in Hebrews 4:8 refers to Joshua—the same Greek name—not to Jesus of Nazareth secretly leading the conquest.
