Merari’s Burdens under Ithamar
Merari’s working-age men carry the structural skeleton of the Tabernacle: boards, bars, pillars, sockets, court pillars, pins, cords, and their equipment. The text even says the pieces are to be reckoned by name. Ithamar again supervises the service.\ \ Where this fits in the story: Numbers 3 assigned these structural components to Merari; Numbers 4 defines them as the clan’s transport burden. Numbers 7 later gives Merari twice Gershon’s wagon allocation—four wagons and eight oxen—according to their heavier service.\ \ Why it matters: sacred order includes inventory. The chapter refuses to separate worship from careful responsibility for physical things.\ \ Canonical continuity: Exodus 38 already names Ithamar in administrative oversight of the Tabernacle inventory. Numbers 4 continues that role without claiming to quote Exodus directly.
