A Wife for the Son of Promise — Covenant Continuity and the Land
Genesis 24 begins after Sarah's death with Abraham old, blessed, and still living as a sojourner in the land promised to his descendants. His concern is now covenant continuity: Isaac must have a wife, but Isaac himself must not be taken back to Mesopotamia. The servant's solemn oath and Abraham's appeal to the LORD who promised the land keep the marriage mission inside the Abrahamic promise rather than reducing it to a generic lesson about choosing a spouse.
Abraham says that the LORD will send His angel before the servant. The story will then emphasize providential guidance rather than direct revelation at every step. The unusual oath gesture of placing a hand under the patriarch's thigh appears again in Genesis 47 when Jacob charges Joseph concerning his burial, marking a solemn family obligation tied to the covenant family's future.
