Priests, Fast, Assembly: Cry to the LORD
Joel does not answer calamity with speculation. He calls the priests to mourn, consecrate a fast, gather elders and inhabitants, enter the house of the LORD, and cry to God. The interrupted offerings make the crisis especially painful: the people cannot pretend worship is untouched by the ruined land. This communal turning recalls the Torah’s assembly life and later temple prayers that ask God to hear when famine, pestilence, or locusts strike. Disaster becomes a summons to seek the covenant God together.
