Wisdom, the Tree of Life, and Creation
The one who finds wisdom is called blessed because wisdom is more valuable than silver, gold, or jewels. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and the passage then grounds human wisdom in God’s own ordering of creation: the LORD founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding.
Proverbs says the LORD founded the earth by wisdom, while Psalm 104 marvels that all God’s works were made in wisdom. Both passages present creation as ordered by divine wisdom rather than chance or rival cosmic powers, making the correspondence direct and theologically important.
Proverbs blesses the one who finds wisdom; James tells the tested believer to ask God for wisdom.
Proverbs blesses the person who finds wisdom and describes wisdom’s ways as pleasant and peaceful; James contrasts earthly wisdom with wisdom from above marked by purity, peace, gentleness, mercy, and righteous fruit. The later apostolic teaching develops the same wisdom ethic.
