Wisdom from Below and Wisdom from Above
James returns explicitly to wisdom. The wise person proves wisdom by a good life and meek works. Bitter envy and selfish ambition expose another wisdom that is “earthly, sensual, devilish.” Wisdom from above is pure, peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, and without hypocrisy. Peacemakers sow a harvest of righteousness in peace.
Where this fits in the story: Proverbs begins wisdom with the fear of the LORD and repeatedly contrasts two ways. James preserves the two-way structure but sharpens it christologically and eschatologically: one wisdom belongs to the world of envy and demonic disorder; the other descends “from above,” like God’s good gifts in 1:17.
