I Have Loved You: Jacob, Esau, and Edom
Malachi opens with a startling dispute: God declares, “I have loved you,” and Israel answers, “Wherein hast thou loved us?” The Lord points back to Jacob and Esau and then forward to Edom’s ruin. The opening issue is therefore not merely emotion; it is whether Israel can still recognize covenant love when circumstances feel disappointing.
Where this fits in the story: Genesis introduces Jacob and Esau before either nation exists, and the prophets later use Edom as a recurring picture of hostile kin judged by God. Malachi reads that long story from the restoration period, insisting that Israel’s continued existence is itself evidence of God’s covenant distinction.
