Two Nations in One Womb — Rebekah’s Barrenness and the Reversal of the Firstborn
The Isaac cycle begins with another threatened promise: Rebekah is barren. Isaac entreats the LORD for his wife, the LORD answers, and she conceives twins. The struggle begins before birth, and Rebekah receives an oracle that interprets it: two nations and two peoples are in her womb, one people will be stronger than the other, and the elder will serve the younger.
This announcement establishes a reversal before Jacob or Esau has acted to obtain it. Romans 9:10–13 explicitly returns to Rebekah's conception and quotes the words, "the elder shall serve the younger," using the prenatal oracle in Paul's argument about God's purpose in election. Malachi 1 later recalls Jacob and Esau in explicitly national terms and identifies Esau with Edom, matching Genesis 25's own language about two nations and peoples.
