Friends, Desertion, Mark Restored, Books and Parchments
The grand language of crown and kingdom gives way to travel plans, coworkers, a cloak, books, and parchments. Demas has deserted Paul “having loved this present world.” Crescens and Titus are elsewhere; Luke remains; Tychicus has been sent to Ephesus. Timothy is told to bring Mark because he is “profitable to me for the ministry.”
Where this fits in the story: Mark’s appearance is especially striking beside Acts 15, where Paul and Barnabas separated over whether to take John Mark after his earlier withdrawal. Later Pauline letters list Mark as a coworker, and here he is explicitly useful. The canon therefore lets the reader see a relationship that moved from serious rupture to restored usefulness.
