Rightly Handling Truth: False Resurrection and a Firm Foundation
Timothy must warn against word battles that ruin hearers and instead present himself to God as an approved worker, “rightly dividing the word of truth.” The contrast is with profane chatter that spreads like gangrene. Hymenaeus and Philetus are named because they have “erred” concerning the truth, saying the resurrection is already past and overturning the faith of some.
Where this fits in the story: resurrection is not a detachable side doctrine. From the prophets’ hopes to Christ’s resurrection and the promised resurrection of his people, bodily life from death belongs to the Bible’s final-restoration story. Treating resurrection as already exhausted collapses future hope.
