Fight the Good Warfare with Faith and a Good Conscience
Timothy’s ministry is pictured as warfare, but the weapons named here are faith and a good conscience. The language keeps spiritual struggle from becoming combative personality. Timothy is to remain faithful to the charge associated with earlier prophecies about him, while others have rejected conscience and suffered shipwreck concerning the faith. The later reference to Timothy’s gift being connected with prophecy and the laying on of hands helps show that his calling was publicly recognized rather than self-appointed.
