Entrust the Teaching: Soldier, Athlete, and Farmer
Timothy is to “be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus,” then pass what he has heard from Paul to faithful people who will be able to teach others also. The movement is deliberate: received truth becomes entrusted truth, creating a chain of transmission beyond Timothy’s own lifetime.
Three images explain the kind of endurance required. The soldier avoids entanglement so as to please the one who enlisted him. The athlete competes according to the rules. The hardworking farmer expects a share in the crop. None of the metaphors says ministry earns grace; verse 1 has already grounded strength “in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.” They show focused loyalty, disciplined faithfulness, and patient labor.
