I Am Joseph — God Sent Me before You to Preserve Life

Judah’s plea breaks the tension. Joseph can no longer restrain himself, sends the Egyptians out, weeps aloud, and declares, “I am Joseph.” His brothers are terrified, but Joseph immediately reframes the history without denying their guilt: “ye sold me hither,” yet “God did send me before you to preserve life.” Human responsibility and divine providence are held together rather than confused. The famine has lasted two years, with five still to come, exactly within the seven-year crisis revealed in Genesis 41. Joseph now sees his descent to Egypt as the means by which God preserved the covenant family and “a posterity” or remnant in the earth. Psalm 105 later adopts the same providential viewpoint, saying God sent Joseph before Israel, while Acts 7 explicitly remembers Joseph being made known to his brothers on their second visit. Genesis 50 will sharpen the theology still further: the brothers meant evil, but God meant the same history for good, to save many alive.
