The Second Temple Is Finished and Dedicated
Tattenai complies, the elders build, and Ezra gives two causes for their success: the prophetic ministry of Haggai and Zechariah and the command of the God of Israel working through Persian kings. The temple is completed in Darius’s sixth year and dedicated with joy.
The sacrifices are strikingly modest beside Solomon’s temple dedication, yet the community offers twelve male goats as a sin offering “for all Israel, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.” The restored population is small and centered in Judah, but it still understands itself within the story of the whole twelve-tribe people.
