Haggai and Zechariah Rekindle the Work—and Tattenai Investigates
The stalled temple project restarts when Haggai and Zechariah prophesy “in the name of the God of Israel.” Zerubbabel and Jeshua begin building again, and the prophets stand with them. Ezra is now directly joined to two prophetic books: Haggai and Zechariah do not merely share a period with Ezra; Ezra explicitly names them as participants in this rebuilding.
Tattenai, governor of the province “Beyond the River,” and his associates ask who authorized the construction and request the builders’ names. Their inquiry is not portrayed exactly like the hostile intimidation of chapter 4. They investigate and report, while “the eye of their God” is upon the Jewish elders so that the work is not stopped before Darius can answer.
