The Time Has Not Come?
Haggai opens inside a real imperial calendar: the second year of Darius. Judah is back in the land but still lives under Persian rule, with Zerubbabel serving as governor and Joshua as high priest. The people are not denying that the LORD’s house matters; they are postponing it. Haggai’s first task is therefore to expose a spiritual priority problem hidden inside a timing argument.
Where this fits in the story: Ezra 5:1–2 later names Haggai and Zechariah as the prophets whose preaching moved Zerubbabel and Jeshua to resume the Jerusalem temple work. The prophetic book and the historical narrative describe the same restoration crisis from two angles.
