Count the Stars — Promise, Impossible Seed, and Righteousness by Faith
Genesis 15:1–6 brings Abram’s deepest problem into the open. God tells him not to fear and identifies Himself as Abram’s shield and great reward, yet Abram remains childless. The promised future cannot proceed if there is no heir. God rejects Abram’s assumption that his household servant will inherit and promises that a son from Abram himself will be his heir. Then He takes Abram outside and points to the stars: “So shall thy seed be.”
The next sentence becomes one of the most important lines in the Bible: “And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.” Later Scripture quotes this verse repeatedly rather than merely echoing it.
