Wait for the Vision: The Righteous Shall Live by Faith
Habakkuk takes his place like a watchman and waits. God tells him to write the vision plainly because it has an appointed time: apparent delay is not failure. The proud person is not upright, but “the just shall live by his faith.” In the original crisis, the contrast is between self-exalting power and the righteous person who continues to rely on God while fulfillment is delayed.
This becomes one of Habakkuk’s greatest canonical crossroads. Romans 1:17 and Galatians 3:11 explicitly quote Habakkuk 2:4, and Hebrews 10:37–39 combines the vision’s waiting language with the call to faith and endurance. The completed canon therefore gives this line a much larger role in explaining righteous life by faith.
