Love One Another: Cain, Death, Life, and Sacrificial Love
John now makes an explicit backward connection: “Not as Cain,” who slew his brother. Genesis 4 becomes a present ethical warning. Hatred belongs to Cain’s pattern and to death; love for the brethren is evidence that believers have “passed from death unto life.” The contrast becomes even stronger when John places Cain beside Christ. Cain took his brother’s life; Christ laid down his life for us. Therefore Christian love is not sentiment but self-giving action. The test becomes painfully practical in verse 17: if someone has material resources, sees a brother in need, and closes his compassion, John asks how God’s love can abide in him. The command closes with one of the letter’s clearest summaries: “let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.”
