Can a Faith That Does Nothing Save?
James attacks a claim to faith that remains only words. If a brother or sister lacks clothing and daily food, a pious farewell that provides nothing is useless. In the same way, “faith” that produces no action is dead. Even demons possess correct monotheistic knowledge and tremble; bare acknowledgment is not the living trust James is describing.
Where this fits in the story: the Shema confesses that God is one, but Deuteronomy never treats that confession as information alone—it calls Israel to love God with the whole self and to embody covenant loyalty. The prophets likewise reject worship detached from justice.
