The Cup of the LORD’s Wrath
Jeremiah receives a symbolic cup of the wine of God’s fury and is told to make the nations drink. Jerusalem drinks first, but the list expands outward through neighboring kingdoms and ultimately “all the kingdoms of the world.” The cup makes clear that Judah’s election does not exempt it from judgment and that the LORD rules the nations as well.
The biblical cup often symbolizes an appointed portion, especially suffering/judgment. Jesus' cup language points forward to Gethsemane and his passion while the disciples misunderstand glory.
Habakkuk’s cup from the LORD’s right hand belongs to the prophetic cup-of-wrath tradition also made explicit in Jeremiah 25.
